Would he and his family suffer violence at Esau's hand because of Jacob's deception more than 20 years earlier? In that situation Jacob prayed to GOD for help. His prayer is a pattern for all believers who find themselves in life-threatening circumstances.(1) Jacob reminded GOD of HIS promise of care and protection for those who follow GOD's will (v. 9);(2) in awareness of his unworthiness, he expressed his gratitude for GOD's past blessing and help (v. 10); (3) he prayed for GOD's deliverance (v. 11); and(4) he stated the ultimate reason for requesting GOD's protection, i.e., to fulfill GOD's covenant purpose in his life (v. 12)." We must understand that although GOD forgives us for a certain sin and restores us to HIS favor, HE may at the same time disciple us for that sin (see 2 Samuel 12:7-14) GOD's principle remains: "Be not deceived; GOD is not mocked: whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.(Galatians 6:7; cf Proverbs 22:8; Hosea 8:7; 10:12-13)." Matthew 25:46). The harvest field represents the lost, many of whom can be saved if there are workers to proclaim CHRIST's salvation to them (see 10:23, note)." Faithful believers will take refuge in the LORD (v. 1) and remain committed to righteousness even if the moral and spiritual 'foundations [are] destroyed' in both society and the church (v. 3); the result will be that the LORD's 'countenance doth behold the upright' (v. 7; cf. 16:8-11; 17:15; 23:6)." This age is the time of the bridegroom's absence, from the time of HIS ascension until HIS return. The church awaits this return of the bridegroom (25:6; see John 14:3, note). Therefore fasting in this age is (1) a sign of the believer's longing for the LORD's return, (2) a way to increase spiritual intimacy with CHRIST, (3) a placing of HIS kingdom interests above our own,(4) a heart preparation for the end of the age and CHRIST's coming, (5) a mourning of CHRIST's absence ,(6) a sign of sorrow for the sin of the world, and (7) a time of intercession for the unsaved (see Matthew 6:16, note)." But 13 years after Ishmael's birth and 24 years after GOD's original promise, the LORD appeared to Abram with a message and a demand.(1) GOD revealed HIMSELF as 'MIGHTY GOD' (Hebrew El Shaddai), meaning that HE was all-powerful and that nothing was impossible with HIM. As ALMIGHTY GOD, HE could fulfill HIS promises when no natural way seemed to exist to fulfill them. Thus, GOD would bring Abram's promised son into the world by a miracle (cf. vv. 15-19; 35:11; Isaiah 9:6; Romans 4:19; Hebrews 11:12).(2) GOD demanded that Abram walk before HIM and be 'perfect' (i.e., wholly dedicated to performing HIS will). Just as Abram's faith was necessary to receive GOD's covenant, so a sincere effort to please GOD was required for the continuation of GOD's covenant blessings (cf. 22:16-18). Abram's faith had to be accompanied by obedience (see Romans 1:5), or he would disqualify himself from participation in GOD's eternal purposes (see article on GOD's Covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, p. 50). In other words, GOD's promises and miracles will only occur when HIS people seek to live blameless lives before HIM and keep their hearts turned toward HIM (cf. 5:24; 6:9; Deuteronomy 13:4; see Matthew 17:20, note). [ Life in the Spirit Study Bible note, pp. 33-34]FATHER,YOU reveal YOURSELF as "MIGHTY GOD," meaning that YOU are all-powerful and that absolutely nothing is impossible with YOU.As ALMIGHTY GOD, YOU can fulfill YOUR Biblical promises to me when no natural way seems to exist to fulfill them. YOU demand that I walk before YOU and be "perfect," i.e., wholly dedicated to performing YOUR will.I am determined to walk before YOU wholly dedicated to performing YOUR will each and every day. Just as my faith is necessary to receive YOUR covenant, so YOU require my sincere effort to please YOU for the continuation of YOUR covenant blessings.I am determined to make a sincere effort to please YOU each and every day.My faith has to be accompanied by my obedience to YOU and YOUR Word or I will disqualify myself from participating in YOUR eternal purposes. In other words, YOUR biblical promises and miracles will only occur in my life when I seek to live a blameless life before YOU.I am determined to seek to live a blameless life before YOU each and every day. We can determine what GOD's will is primarily in HIS revealed Word, the Bible, and through the HOLY SPIRIT's leading in our hearts (cf. Romans 8:4-14; see article on The Will of GOD, p. 1066). The will of GOD is accomplished when we pray for 'the kingdom of GOD, and HIS righteousness' to come among us (Matthew 6:33; see article on The Kingdom of GOD, p. 1432)." We may appeal to GOD on the basis of a clear conscience and our sincere endeavor to maintain uprightness of heart.(1) We man assert our spiritual integrity before GOD by praying 'Judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness (v. 8; cf. Job 29:14). Such a claim is not self-righteousness if it is spoken from a sincere heart, purified by love for GOD through faith (1 John 3:21; James 5:16).(2) What a blessed thing it is to pray for GOD's help with a repentant heart (Psalm 6). But it is even better when we can pray to GOD with a clear conscience and with the knowledge that we have wronged no one and have sought sincerely to love GOD with all our heart." Thus 'believe' (Hebrew aman) means to persevere in trust and belief by manifesting obedient faithfulness. This was the kind of faith Abram possessed. His heart was turned toward GOD in an enduring trust, obedience, and submission.(2) GOD saw Abram's heart-attitude of faith and counted it to him for righteousness. The term 'righteousness' means being in a right relationship to GOD, [HIS Wor, and HIS will (cf. 6:9; Job 15:14-16). Furthermore, GOD entered into covenant fellowship with Abram, whereby Abram received GOD as his shield and reward (v. 1), many descendants (v. 5), and the promise of the land (v. 7; see article on GOD's Covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, p. 50).(3) Under the new covenant, GOD"s blessing, a right relationship with HIM and fellowship with HIM also come through faith. This is a foundational truth in the New Testament (Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6; James 2:23). As such Abraham is the 'father of all them that believe' (Romans 4:11)." Rather it is a wrong thought or desire that is accompanied by the approval of one's will. The inner desire for illicit sexual pleasure, if contemplated and not resisted is sin (see article on Standards of Sexual Morality, p. 1980](1) The Christian must be particularly careful to abstain from taking pleasure in scenes of immorality or nudity such as those shown in films, videos, TV, books, magazines, and on some internet sites (cf. 1 Corinthians 6:15,18; Galatians 5:19,21; Ephesians 5:5; Colossians 3:5; 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus 2:12: Hebrews 13:4; James 1:14; 1 Peter 2:11; 2 Peter 3:3; 1 John 2:16). View More"Is Obedience to GOD Essential to a Saving Relationship With HIM?" January 05, 2021Read Genesis 11:1-13:44 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran (v. 12:4, KJV)."The narrative from the very beginning emphasizes the truth that obedience to GOD is essential to a saving relationship with HIM. Abram obeyed the Word of the LORD. His obedience included leaving his home and country and trusting in GOD's care, guidance, and promises (see v. 1, note; James 2:17, note; 1 John 2:4, note). [Life in the Spirit Study Bible note, p. 28]17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone (James 2:17)."True saving faith is so vital that it cannot help but express itself in godly action and devotion to JESUS CHRIST. Works without faith are dead works. Faith without works is dead faith. True faith always manifests itself in obedience to GOD and compassionate works done for needy people (see v. 22, note; Romans 1:5, note; see articles on The Care of the Poor and Needy, p. 1574, and Faith and Grace, p. 1748). [Life in the Spirit Study Bible note, p. 1988-1989]4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments [precepts, truths. doctrines, statutes, etc.], is a liar, and the truth is not in him (1 John 2:4). "John was contending against a misunderstanding of the doctrine of grace and salvation. He opposed antinomian teachers, who taught that forsaking a sinful life was optional for the believer.(1) They declared that one can legitimately claim to 'know' GOD in a saving relationship and at the same time be indifferent to GOD's will and HIS commandments, and disobey them (see John 17:3, note).(2) Those who make such a claim, John states, are liars and do not have the truth of GOD in them. The attempt to be justified through faith in CHRIST without a commitment to follow HIM as LORD is doomed to failure." [Life in the Spirit Study Bible note, p. 2021]FATHER,I am determined to emphasize the truth that obedience to YOU is essential to a saving relationship with YOU.I am determined to obey YOUR Word each and every day.I am determined to trust in YOUR care, YOUR guidance, and YOUR promises each and every day.I am determined to have true saving faith so vital that it cannot help but express itself in godly action and devotion to JESUS CHRISTI am determined to always manifest my faith in obedience to YOU and compassionate works done for needy peopleI am determined to keep YOUR commandments, precepts, truths, doctrines, statutes, etc. I am determined to forsake a sinful life. Amen. Read Matthew 5:1-266 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled (v. 6, KJV)."This is one of the most important verses in the Sermon on the Mount.(1) The foundational requirement for all godly living is to 'hunger and thirst after righteousness' (cf. 6:33). Such hunger is seen in Moses (Exodus 33:13,18), the psalmist (see Psalm 42:2,6; 63:1-122, notes), and the apostle Paul (Philippians 3:10). The spiritual condition of Christians throughout their lives will depend on their hunger and thirst for (a) the presence of GOD (Deuteronomy 4:29), (b) the Word of GOD (Psalm 119), (c) the communion of CHRIST (Philippians 3:8-10),
the fellowship of the SPIRIT (John 7:37-39; 2 Corinthians 13:14),
righteousness (5:6), (f) kingdom power (6:33), and (g) the return of the LORD (2 Timothy 4:8).(2) The Christian's hunger [and thirst] for the things of GOD is destroyed by worldly anxiety, deceitfulness of wealth (13:22), desire for things (Mark 4:19), life's pleasures (Luke 8:14), and failure to abide in CHRIST (see John 15:4, note). When the hunger [and thirst] of believers for GOD and HIS righteousness is destroyed, they will die spiritually. For this reason it is essential that we be sensitive to the HOLY SPIRIT's convicting work in our lives (see John 16:8-13; Romans 8:5-16)." Read Psalm 5:1-123 My voice shalt THOU hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto THEE, and will look up (v. 3, KJV)."Firmly determined to seek GOD with all his heart, David commits himself to three actions.(1) Confident that GOD will hear his voice, he will persist in prayer and not live without it (vv. 102; cf. Deuteronomy 4:29).(2) He will pray to GOD 'in the morning.' If we orient our lives around GOD, morning prayers will be the natural thing to do. Each new morning calls for a renewed dedication of ourselves to GOD (55:16-17; 88:13; 119:147), fellowship with HIM, and a feeding upon HIS Word (cf. 119:9-16).(3) He will 'look up' in expectation for an answer to his prayer, and throughout the day he will search for signs that GOD is at work in his life." Amen.Read Proverbs 1:24-2826 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh (v. 26, KJV)."The book of Proverbs emphasizes that GOD has given absolute standards of right and wrong in HIS Word; to disregard them will bring tragic results in our lives. One of the greatest truths we can learn is that we will indeed reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7-9). The eventual price we pay for sin is anguish, suffering, and even disaster."
